Here's another little gem for you sent to us from our like-minded friend Alex over at Girlz on Vinyl. As with my last post, there is little to no info available on this release but the perfect pop vocals, rock leanings and big synth tick all the right boxes for me. I'm gonna put the B-side up first cause I love it just a bit more than the A-side. Gonna keep this short today as I have a lot to catch up on but I'll be back soon with more! Scherezade-Million Years/Seventeen 7" (UK, 1982)

Lately it feels like there are too many catastrophes to keep up with. I mean, US politics alone, amiright? Those of us in Canada have basically been waiting and watching for the sickness to spread. Trudeau's acceptance of the DAPL earlier this week was the whimper and last night the news of 6 dead and 19 injured in a shooting rampage at a mosque in Quebec City became the bang. I usually try to keep politics out of my online life, but it's becoming more and more difficult to justify.

At any rate, this morning I woke up with the general sense of futility and despair that accompany waking up in a post-Trump world and I checked my phone, as per usual, to see what had died, exploded, been raped and/or pillaged overnight and instead of that, this song was waiting for me. Along with a host of new and exciting stuff.

This was sent to me by my new friend Alex who runs the PlanetNamedDesire YouTube channel which you should 100% go check out as well as the accompanying Facebook HERE. The Girlz On Vinyl playlist is basically 74 hits in a row, and I should know cause I listened to ALL of them this morning. Which is why my time for research is a bit short today, so I will just say I know NOTHING about this except what I was told which is basically it's limited to 200 copies. So, if you see one, pick it up. If you see two, send me one. And, just for good measure, here's another track by Somerset group Visibility Zero which was unreleased but killer.

This brought a little happy into my day, as only nerding out about records can do. I hope if you don't find it here, you get a little bit of respite in your day as well.

Today I had to listen to some stuff that took me back to a part of the 90's that I hate. My brain backlashed and brought me back to some stuff I'm gonna share with you here. A part of the 90's that I love. This general theme has been the majority of my day and as with my Subway Organisation post, I am not going to get into too many specifics for these groups, maybe none at all? Oh yeah, all this stuff can be found on the Waaaaah! CD compilation out in 1991.

Stinky Toys-Plastic Faces LP (France, 1977) & Elli and Jacno-Boomerang LP (France, 1982)

Are y'all ready for Valentine's Day? Have your rose petals scattered to and fro, champagne chilling in the fridge, chocolate fountain filled to the brim? Yeah, me too.  I mean, I usually just recycle the same décor from my celebration of Lincoln's Birthday and no one ever seems to notice. On a more serious note, this week has been crazy. So much awesome tempered by so much not. I think the good is still winning by a fine margin, so that's good, 'spose.

Anyway, my friend Mark as been in a French state of mind and it's got me revisiting a lot of my favourites, including these two.  First up, Stinky Toys with their hit Plastic Faces. I find everything about this video charming. Elli's dancing, how the host delays them and she missed her lip sync cue and the banter is priceless, although, in French.

After Stinky Toys, Elli and Jacno went on to perform together under the name Elli & Jacno, imagine that. They put out three LPs and a load of singles and a simple Google search will bring back a wealth of info on these two sweethearts. Of course, they have great videos, too.

Sorry, I have not been feeling so obscure lately. I will get back to posting things by bands you've NEVER heard of, soon.  I promise. In the mean time, I hope these classics can sustain you. My seeming laziness has good purpose, I assure you.  What little brainpower I have is being directed to something awesome.  

Also, a few things for you Montrealers reading out there.  Saturday, there are two shows I can recommend you in good faith. First off, Pypy are playing the TRH Bar.  I have not found a Facebook event for this but you can go to the Pypy FB page HERE or listen to them HERE.

If that doesn't float your boat, if you're more in a mood to rrrioooooottttt, Heathers 1988, Towanda and She Divides are all playing a lady power show HERE. Should not be unfun, or however you wanna say that.

There are also a whole bunch of shows coming up, so stay posted. Things are about to get fun again. We will see Peach Kelli Pop, Pleasure Leftists, Blouse, The Brusque Twins, PDM and Dum Dum Girls in the coming months as well as others, I'm sure. Too bad Belgrado tour was cancelled.  Blah blah anyway, gotta get back to work. This episode of Antiques Roadshow is not gonna watch itself.

Nice & New: Weeknight, Doomsquad, Marie Davidson, Low Factor, Violence & Zodiacs OH MY!

I was informed that Superbowl Sunday is the day the most women get physically abused in the US and tomorrow there will be the most people calling in sick than any other day of the year. Despite the fact I am not watching sports or drinking beer, my thoughts are still 100% scattered to the winds. In turn with that sentiment, here are a few things, in no particular order, before I forget them:

Firstly, on February 9th, a week from today, I will be at Il Motore to see this band, Weeknight, and would love to see you there. I know, I know, Il Motore smells like piss and fish and it's far from everything except that one chandelier store. But, I would still love to dance and drink with you should you want to come do so with me. Doomsquad are also playing and it will be a dreamy good time. Event info HERE.

Secondly, a fair warning. Our dear, darling friends over at Weyrd Son Records are releasing the new LP by Montreal artist Marie Davidson early next month. The pressing is lovely and limited so if you're interested act fast. Only 300 pressed and I'm getting one so that only leaves 299 for the rest of you. Keep an eye out HERE.

On another Montreal note, our other friends who you should know by now, Low Factor and Violence, have BOTH just released their LPs. You can find the Violence record HERE and the Low Factor HERE. Lastly, nice but bending my definition of "new" a bit, Zodiacs.  Remember this little ditty? Well, it's been stuck in my head for a week. Hopefully, it's like a chain letter and I will be off the hook once YOU listen to it. I promise, nothing bad will happen to you if you don't, though. *Wink, wink*  A catchy jam from the Captured Tracks all-stars. Speaking of, the CT brick & mortar is the only place I believe has remaining copies of ODIF #1. Last I heard, anyway. We are sold out of all our other distros hither and yon. And, I certainly don't have any more so stop asking. Will reprint some along with Issue 2 so don't despair.

Emma Sharpe & The Features-I'm Not Crying (UK, 1979)

Ok, here's another one I have pestered my friends with since I first heard this song.  I still have hopes on this so I'm not going to say a lot but my buddy Sovannak made me a rad video so I could share this with y'all. I am totally obsessed/in love with Emma Sharpe and The Features and you can find most anything you want to know HERE. Ok, countdown is on to the ODIF Montreal Showcase on Thursday.  Going to be a great show and loads of fun.  Hope to see everyone there!

The Poppy Family-That's Where I Went Wrong (Canada, 1971)

Now, I know what you are going to say.  Not only is this band pop-country, far outside of my wheelhouse, this album was put out in 1971!  That is far before the cut-off date this blog claims to cover.  But, listen to what I have to say: it's just SO good and it is always randomly popping into my head when there is rain, or a bus or anything or nothing.  The video accompanying this track is terrible however so just close your eyes and enjoy the sweet, sweet heartbreak of Susan Jacks in The Poppy Family.
