Scherezade-Million Years/Seventeen 7" (UK, 1982)

Lately it feels like there are too many catastrophes to keep up with. I mean, US politics alone, amiright? Those of us in Canada have basically been waiting and watching for the sickness to spread. Trudeau's acceptance of the DAPL earlier this week was the whimper and last night the news of 6 dead and 19 injured in a shooting rampage at a mosque in Quebec City became the bang. I usually try to keep politics out of my online life, but it's becoming more and more difficult to justify.

At any rate, this morning I woke up with the general sense of futility and despair that accompany waking up in a post-Trump world and I checked my phone, as per usual, to see what had died, exploded, been raped and/or pillaged overnight and instead of that, this song was waiting for me. Along with a host of new and exciting stuff.

This was sent to me by my new friend Alex who runs the PlanetNamedDesire YouTube channel which you should 100% go check out as well as the accompanying Facebook HERE. The Girlz On Vinyl playlist is basically 74 hits in a row, and I should know cause I listened to ALL of them this morning. Which is why my time for research is a bit short today, so I will just say I know NOTHING about this except what I was told which is basically it's limited to 200 copies. So, if you see one, pick it up. If you see two, send me one. And, just for good measure, here's another track by Somerset group Visibility Zero which was unreleased but killer.

This brought a little happy into my day, as only nerding out about records can do. I hope if you don't find it here, you get a little bit of respite in your day as well.

Nice & New: Makthaverskan, Flowers and Fire & Shopping

Wow, it's been like six months since I had time to post on here. Oops! Boy, have I been busy. I won't bore you with too many details but clawing my way from a long, slow descent into madness then getting the world's most stressful job and buying a second house... Been fun. Let's never speak of it again. Anyhoo, a very little update about some stuff that's coming up that I care about. I missed telling you about the Sheer Mag show the other day, and prolly a lot of other stuff in the last six months, but here are a few things to make up for that.

Thursday, September 17th:

Xarah Dion and Police Des Moeurs are playing the Des Jeunes Gens Modernes film launch for POP Montreal. Will be a fun, if not a slightly pricey, evening. Also, the new PDM tracks are hot. Not to be missed. 

Thursday, September 24th:

Flowers and Fire will be playing the first night of Varning Fest with a pretty stacked line-up including Malokio and Dekoder, headlined by Born Dead Icons. That's all I'll say about that. I can't seen to get the embed for this to work but you can listen here if it continues to be difficult:

Man, not to be missed in my opinion, Makthaverskan from Sweden are playing at La Vitrola, event info HERE. I have literally been jamming this all day, very stoked.

SHOPPING. I honestly never thought I'd see Shopping in Montreal but they will be playing at Bar Le Ritz. Gah. Yay! I have loved this band for a long time and stoked to see them the same place I saw 

Wet Dog before them.

Okay, I need sleep.  I make no promises on any future posts but at the very least Tops, Nots and Molly Nilsson are playing soon so maybe I'll come tell you about that? In the meantime, stay frosty!

Cry Of The Innocent-The Haunting/Still, Forever 7" (UK, 1982)

So, I have basically been sitting on my thumbs, not being struck by anything I really wanted to post about. Maybe because I've been busy and my stress level is through the roof right now, but today I got a wealth of inspiration that I'm going to chop up into several thematic posts this week before getting the hell out of dodge on Friday. Not to digress too much into a Dear Diary type thing here, but as many of you may know who follow me other places, my grandmother died last Wednesday and then Friday the neighbor's toilet overflowed and destroyed pretty much my whole house. So, I am going to go on a mini-vacay this weekend to see some shows and friends and when I get back, pack up my entire life and move out while the insurance company fixes my house.

Anyhoo, this never-ending shit show has me listening to a lot of stuff on the darker side of things including, but not limited to, this record by Cry Of The Innocent from Hull. If you read the zine, you know how much I love things from Hull and this is no exception. This record has just the kind of sound I love and the first time I heard the b-side, Lee Jones had my heart at the very first "Hey!"

Kaméléon-S/T LP (Quebec, 1981) & Térapi-S/T 7" (Quebec, 1982)

Man, what a fucking day. Got on my bike to go to work and the front wheel fell off, inexplicably, when I started riding. Rushed to take the metro, which was jam packed, of course, and some guy took the chance to grab my butt. Work was hell and there must be something in the air because everyone was grumpy all over today. But, for all the lows, there were some very nice highs. Amongst them, an acquisition of some records sorely missing in my collection. I am not going to brag but in among those is one of my favorite records from Quebec and here we are with this post about two bands from our fair province. 

I will start with Térapi. Just one self titled 7" with four songs out in 1982. You can go like them on Facebook HERE and mostly keep up with the singer's current solo career. Here's such a Quebec jammy jam. 

Now, onto Kaméléon. The singer of which still lives in Montreal and does some pretty rad shit. You can check out her current "electroacoustic" music HERE.  This particular record is pretty disco-y but stupid catchy. But, judge for yourself. 

Anyway, NDY is coming up so I will be back soon with some Toronto bands for you. Maybe even something before them?

Nice & New: Rakta, Koban, La Luz & Votive

Wow, so much has happened in the last month, I hardly know where to begin. Late last month I turned 31 and then a couple days after I got on a plane to Arkansas to be with my mother when she died. I was away from home, or back home in a sense, for a couple weeks straightening out family business and have been in a fog since I got back to Montreal and pretty much went straight back to work. I have been to a couple shows, begrudgingly, since my return.  La Luz played during Pop Montreal and it was lovely. I posted about them on the ODIF Facebook page once but my love has grown since then so I thought I reiterate it here. If you get a chance to see them, by all means go. They have an LP out on Hardly Art with all the hits from the demo and many more.

I went to one other show during Pop which was a hot mess of wine drunkenness on my part but was Votive from Toronto. I always get suckered into these new TO bands and am usually disappointed, like with Ice Cream. This time was a bit better considering Votive is Cam from Kontravoid with his girlfriend singing, and pretty much sounds exactly like that. Not bummed I went, except the hangover the next day. I can't find a recording of this anywhere however, so go see them live if you get the shot.

Anyway, moving on to another band I am sure I have mentioned before, Koban! The EP is finally out on some massively colorful pink splatter vinyl and on one of our favourite labels, Weyrd Son Records. You can

I know I didn't mention La Luz and Votive before, when you could have actually gone to see them here, but I'll give you a fair warning on Rakta, from Brazil, who are playing here October 11th at Casa, event info HERE. This band is super trendy nowadays but I do actually really like it. Nice & New: Ice Cream, Brusque Twins, She Divides & Towanda

All last month I kept telling people I would just see them next month and here we are. Next month.  So...let me tell you a little bit about what I have planned, maybe you'll want to do some of the same stuff! I have been kind of fearing this week and tried to sleep all weekend in preparation but that didn't work.  Luckily, a few things have been cancelled and MOST of what is applicable to you, is listed below.

Okay, I'm gonna REALLY pare this down for you. Just the stuff you should really care about, as there are loads of other shows all week.

Suzy Saxon and the Anglos-Boys In Dresses 7" (US, 1983)

I picked this record up in New York a while back completely on a whim. It was cheap, looked awesome, girl singer, right year and lo and behold, it's pretty catchy. And, there's a video! Here's the kicker: I have found everyone in this band and none of them have returned my messages. I did get a hold of (and I'm not gonna say how) Suzy Saxon's cell phone number. BUT SHOULD I CALL HER? Out of the blue, cold call? Seems crazy? I mean, I stalk the heck out of people on the INTERNET for an interview but calling? 

So, what do you think? Should I call Suzy Saxon?

On another note, I am going through some pretty dumb and stressful family shit right now, so please excuse any long absences, etc. I am doing my best to keep everything together but all non-essential programs in my life are taking a hit right now, so have patience with me.

Joolz-Love Is (Sweet Romance) 7" (UK, 1985)

I am back from Toronto! What a wild weekend.  I had a VERY interesting meeting with Mark of United State for the next issue of the zine and picked up some records including this little gem, Joolz, among some other things.  I must say, I skipped this record the fist time based on the cover art but am happy it was put back under my nose for re-inspection.  Both tracks on this are super cool, by why wouldn't they be, the music was written by guys from New Model Army and was recorded by Mark Boyne, who also worked on almost every New Order record.  And, here's a big, long interview with her HERE. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the track. I am going to get some interviews transcribed and rehydrate after a very taxing 48 hours.  Hope you had a good weekend!

Kitchen & The Plastic Spoons-Screams To God (Sweden, 1980)
